This scholarship is one of several created by Western University as part of its admission scholarship program for Black and Indigenous students, honoring notable community members. It recognizes outstanding secondary school students entering the first year of any undergraduate program directly from high school. There are 10 scholarships available annually under this specific award (the "Distinction" tier), which sits alongside two related awards for Black students: the Carmeta Thelma Hodges Scholarship of Excellence (10 awards at $6,000) and the general Western Continuing Admission Scholarship of Excellence for Black Students (20 awards at $6,000).

What the award includes

10 scholarships available annually, each valued at $2,500 per year

Renewable for up to 4 years (total up to $10,000 over four years)

Plus $2,000 available for an optional study-abroad/international learning experience

Study abroad funding is given as a single payment and must be used for an eligible international experience approved by Western International, completed by the end of the fourth year of study

First-year funding is applied directly to the student's fee account before the first fee installment is due

Who can apply

Must be an outstanding secondary school student entering the first year of any undergraduate program at Western University directly from high school

Must self-identify as a Black student via the official Self-ID form by June 30 for consideration

Based on top admission average (specific cutoff not published — competitive, relative ranking among self-identified applicants)

Available to both domestic and international students

Students who have previously attended a post-secondary institution (or attended one and then returned to secondary school) are NOT eligible

Cannot be combined with the National Scholarship Program or Schulich Leader Scholarships

Admission scholarships cannot be deferred
