UK government-funded scholarships for talented people from eligible low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries. They support master’s and PhD study at partner universities such as Lancaster. They are aimed at people who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK.
About this scholarship
The scheme aims to give talented, motivated people the chance to build the knowledge and skills they need to contribute to sustainable development in their home country. The scholarships are offered under six CSC development themes. Lancaster Management School has also been listed as taking CSC awards for online master’s programmes. For example, the 2024/25 round offered 15 scholarships for healthcare professionals in low- and middle-income Commonwealth countries in Africa. That was a specific round, so check whether it recurs.
What the award includes
The following comes from the CSC’s general terms for master’s awards, not from Lancaster’s page.
- Full tuition fees.
- A monthly living stipend. One secondary source gives £1,452 a month, so check the current rate on the CSC site.
- Return airfare, plus allowances such as arrival, thesis and warm clothing, and extra support for disability or for single parents with children.
- Scholars can’t take paid work during the award without CSC approval.
Who can apply
- Be a citizen of an eligible Commonwealth country, have refugee status there, or be a British Protected Person, and be permanently resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.
- Master’s: hold a first degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) standard, or a lower second plus a relevant postgraduate qualification.
- Be unable to afford UK study without the scholarship.
- Master’s awards are for full-time taught programmes. MBAs are generally not eligible.
- The CSC would not normally fund a second Master’s degree, so you’d need to justify one.
