ACES Scholarships

Since 1999, the ACES Education Fund and its predecessor organization have awarded more than 150 scholarships to students with a passion for editing. Six scholarships are given out annually, funded through donor generosity. Five of these are the general ACES Scholarships (one specifically designated the Aubespin Scholarship, named for Merv Aubespin, a former National Association of Black Journalists president who helped inspire ACES's founding), and the sixth is the Bill Walsh Scholarship, named for the late longtime Washington Post copy editor and ACES Education Fund board member, awarded specifically for excellence in news editing.

4 general ACES Scholarships: $1,500 each

1 Aubespin Scholarship: $2,500

1 Bill Walsh Scholarship: $3,500

All 6 winners are also eligible for financial aid to attend the ACES national in-person conference

Must have completed at least one year of higher education

Must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at the time of the deadline (Nov. 15)

Must demonstrate an interest in pursuing editing as a career

Open regardless of nationality, residence, or academic field

Previous scholarship winners are not eligible

Members of the ACES Board of Directors, ACES administrators, and their families are not eligible

A student may apply for both the Walsh Scholarship and one of the other five scholarships simultaneously, but can win only one

Walsh Scholarship specifically: applicant should aspire to edit news and demonstrate talent/passion for language and journalism

The other five scholarships: applicant should show commitment to and effectiveness in editing written materials, with strong critical thinking and passion for clear, accurate, engaging writing
